TORONTO (CP) — North American stock markets gained strength and the Canadian dollar rose half a U.S. cent Thursday morning.
Toronto’s S&P/TSX composite index was up 129.96 points at 13,675.21 after 90 minutes of trading, adding to a 63-point gain on Wednesday.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average of 30 stocks was up 181.18 points at 16,532.56 while the broader S&P 500 advanced 24.06 points to 1,972.92 and Nasdaq gained 45.47 points to 4,795.45.
The Canadian dollar was up 0.52 of a cent, rising to 75.87 cents US.
On the commodity markets, the December gold contract fell $9 to US$1,124.60 an ounce, the October crude contract up $1.51 at US$47.76 a barrel and the October contract for natural gas was up one cent at US$2.66.
