CAMBODIA gold prospector and mine royalty holder Angkor Gold discovered what will be that nation’s first commercial gold mine.
Yet the Canada company is getting headlines more for its community efforts in the small SE Asia nation than for its gold, copper and molybdenum prospecting.
TORONTO • In the halls of this year’s Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) mining conference in Toronto, Leigh Curyer was treated like a star.
“It was a lot of fun, but we’ve still got a lot more work to do and many more things to achieve,” Curyer, the chief executive of NexGen Energy Ltd., said in an interview.
After a multi-year bear market in which nearly every junior mining stock got decimated, the sector is enjoying an honest-to-goodness recovery in 2016. This year’s PDAC conference is ringing with renewed optimism as commodities, particularly gold, are rebounding.
But the early evidence suggests this recovery is limited to a very small group of companies. The high-quality juniors are raising money again and enjoying huge bumps in their share prices. Meanwhile, nothing has changed for most of the companies, which remains entrenched in an awful bear market with no end in sight.
Climbing demand for the metal lithium at a time of broader commodity weakness has Canada's Nemaska Lithium Inc and Western Lithium USA Corp confident they can soon obtain scarce capital even as other junior miners struggle.
TORONTO (Reuters) - Canada's main stock index fell on Tuesday as lower commodity prices and weak Chinese trade data weighed on energy and mining stocks, but defensive stocks rose and the index still held
PDAC, the world’s biggest gathering of mining professionals, serves as a good barometer for the state of the industry, and this year’s show is a reminder that things are pretty grim
A gauge of stock markets worldwide rose to new two-month highs on Friday, on pace for a fourth day of gains, as oil and other commodity prices firmed and strong U.S. jobs growth bolstered confidence in the global economy.
Canada’s main stock index hit a fresh 2016 high on Thursday as energy stocks gained despite a slip in oil prices and financial and mining shares also rose.
