Canadian equity indices extended their gains for the third straight week on the back of strong earnings growth, positive U.S. manufacturing data and strong Canadian natural gas sales data. Last week, Statistics Canada reported that Canadian natural gas sales increased 8.9% year on year to 10,210 million cubic meters during December 2013, which was 26.4% higher than the November 2013 sales. However, the decline in energy commodities prices offset the positive sales data. Gold prices increased a marginal 0.42% closing Friday at $1,324.25 an ounce while crude oil prices increased 1.9% ending the week at $102.20 per barrel. Investors will keenly watch the latest economic growth figures for Canada and the U.S. to be released this week along with earnings reports from the big Canadian banks.
Ubika Research has shortlisted ten Canadian natural resources stocks which outperformed the major Canadian equity indices and their respective sector indices last week witnessing higher market interest. We note that these stocks touched their 52-week highs last week. Average trading volumes over the past five days have been significantly higher than their one month daily average trading volumes. The shortlisted stocks outperformed their respective indices during the week, recording price gains ranging from 15% to 130% with daily average traded volume in excess of 100,000.
