TSX Second Best Performing Index in H1’2014, 10 Sub C$3 Stocks Rising Over 200%: Investment Idea of the Day

Revival in Energy producers and Gold mining shares have pushed the Canadian indices to record highs, rewarding investors with the second-best returns among the world’s largest markets this year. The Canadian benchmark S&P/TSX Composite Index has gained over 11% this year closing at a record high 15,146 on June 30, 2014, trailing only the 19% gains in India’s S&P BSE Sensex across the world’s 10 biggest markets. The unrest in Iraq, escalating tensions between Ukraine and Russia and the harshest North American winter in three decades have boosted Oil and natural gas prices this year. Gold prices have risen over 10% till date during 2014.

The S&P/TSX has gained almost twice as much as the S&P 500 this year, in the process attracting international investors looking for better returns. Statistics Canada reports that foreigners have bought C$3.64 billion in shares during April, an eighth month of purchases and the most since November. Valuations of the benchmark equity gauge are trading at three-year high price-to-earnings ratio of 20.2, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Moreover, Bloomberg estimates that the Canadian earnings are seen improving by 25% during 2014 helped by declines in the Canadian dollar, which are making domestic goods cheaper compared to competition from abroad.
