Avanir Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: AVNR)
shares shot up 85% to $12.49 on volume of more than 87.4 million shares Monday
after the biopharmaceutical company announced what it called “positive results”
from its Phase II clinical trial evaluating the safety and efficacy of AVP-923
for the treatment of agitation in patients with Alzheimer’s disease.

As well,
shares of Bankrate, Inc. (NYSE: RATE)
slid 14% to $11.92 on more than 3.9 million shares traded as the publisher of
personal finance content said the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission was investigating
its financial reporting during 2012 and added that its Chief Financial Officer had
resigned. 

Alere Inc. (NYSE: ALR)
stock price, meanwhile, moved up 12% to $41.14 after Bloomberg reported that the company’s former CEO is working with
shareholders to buy the health-services company and take it private for $46 a
share.

Finally,
Miller Energy Resources, Inc. (NYSE: MILL)
shares jumped 13% to $4.90 after the oil and natural gas exploration,
production and drilling company announced the appointment of a new CEO, provided
an update on drilling operations, and said it has entered into a non-binding
letter of intent to purchase substantially all the operating assets of
Buccaneer Energy in Alaska.
