Canadian equity indices ended mixed during 2013, underperforming the U.S markets for yet another year. The Canadian benchmark index, S&P/TSX Composite Index registered gains of 9.6%, while the TSX Venture Index dropped 23.7% as fallout of being heavily weighted to the resources sectors. We note that the metals and mining sector lost 39% during 2013 primarily on the back of declining commodity prices and lower demand. The energy sector recorded modest gains of 10%. The healthcare sector was the top performer during 2013, recording gains of 71.7%. WTI Crude oil prices registered 5.8% gains ending 2013 at $98.42 per barrel while Brent prices rose 6.5% to $110.8 at the end of 2013.
