According to a monthly M&A report by Zephyr, a database of M&A, IPO, and private equity and venture capital deals, a total of 1,603 Merger & Acquisition deals, worth a combined $91.5 billion, were announced in North America during January 2014. The total deal value was up 21% over the corresponding period last year, but declined 25% from December 2013. A total of 812 deals were announced in the U.S. which aggregated to $83.9 billion, while 251 deals worth $7.6 billion were announced in Canada during the month. The biggest rise in the deal values was witnessed in the chemicals, rubber and plastics sector, with deals worth $13.7 billion compared to $3.2 billion announced during December 2013.
