Bluebird Bio, Inc. (NASDAQ: BLUE)
shares shot up 32% to $34.46 on volume of more than 5.3 million shares Monday
after the clinical-stage gene therapies company announced that it had seen
positive results in treating two patients with an inherited blood disorder.
As well,
shares of Layne Christensen Company (NASDAQ: LAYN)
slipped 14% to $12.79 as the water management, construction, and drilling
company reported a wider than expected first quarter loss as well as revenue
that missed Wall Street expectations.
DARA BioSciences, Inc. (NASDAQ: DARA), meanwhile,
reported that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted Orphan
Drug Designation to its experimental compound KRN5500 for the treatment of multiple myeloma. DARA
stock popped 14% to $1.28 following the announcement.
Finally,
Fusion-io (NYSE: FIO)
shares jumped 22% to $11.36 after SanDisk Corporation
(NASDAQ: SNDK)
agreed to buy the developer of flash-based PCIe hardware and software solutions
for approximately $1.1 billion in cash, or $11.25 per share.
