11 Attractive Russell Index Stocks with Strong Price Returns: Investment Idea of the Day

Published:

Smallcap shares tracked by Russell 2000 Index have rallied for seven straight quarters, the longest stretch ever, sending the valuations 26% above the levels of the 1990s rally, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Matthew Peron, managing director of global equities at Northern Trust Corp. in Chicago notes that the rally in smallcap stocks reflects expansion of American economy faster than rest of the world. The benchmark gauge for smaller shares has risen 2.6% this quarter compared with 1% gain in the S&P 500. During the past one year, the smallcap shares index has returned over 24%.

During the last quarter, profits of the Russell 2000 companies improved 6.8% while S&P 500 companies registered a growth of 8.6%. Currently, the Russell 2000 index is trading 49 times its reported earnings compared to multiple of 39x during March 2000, while the S&P 500 has a price-earnings ratio of 17x, close to its average since 1937, as per data compiled by Bloomberg. China’s economic slowdown and political crises in Ukraine has fuelled the rally in American small-caps as investors played safe bets on stocks that are not reliant on global revenues. The average firm in the Russell 2000 gets 84% of its sales from the U.S., compared with 70% for the S&P 500, data compiled by Bloomberg show.

Ubika Research has shortlisted eleven attractive smallcap stocks from Russell Index 2000 which have recorded significant price gains year-to-date and during the past one year. Moreover, these stocks are likely to rally further since they are currently trading at relatively low forward Price-to-Earning (P/E) in comparison to the Russell 2000 Index and provide high return on equity with strong estimated EPS growth for 2014. We note that these stocks have recorded significant gains during the past month with three months daily average traded volume in excess of 100,000.
